THE GARDEN THEN:

the clients enjoyed their garden but the lack of structure made it difficult to manage. It's essential that both the plants and structure work hard in a small garden so that there's always something interesting going on.

THE BRIEF:

was for the garden to be suitable for a wheelchair user, to have a shady area to sit under and enjoy views of the garden. The clients are keen plants people and wanted a wide range of plants with year round interest, space to grow vegetables and plants to attract birds into the garden. The front garden was also to be designed without a lawn.

THE DESIGN:

The garden has was divided into two areas; the main one has a path wide enough for a wheelchair to meander through to a small paved area at the end of the garden. A timber pergola has been built creating a shaded corner to enjoy dining with friends next to a small pool.
The second area comprises a compact vegetable garden at the end of the garden, with raised vegetable beds, a shed and potting bench.

Cordon fruit trees, tall, airy grasses and perennials were planted against an open fence to divides the garden.

The small patch of grass in the front garden was removed and replaced with overlapping circles of shingle that reflects the shapes in the rear garden. Small, structural evergreen shrubs and flowering plants were selected to thrive in the poor soil.
